Orion Flares and Signaling Devices--Check your expiration dates!
ARE YOU U.S. COAST GUARD COMPLIANT? OR, ARE YOU RISKING AN $1,100.00 FINE?
Remember, flare inventory must be current to pass a USCG inspection. It's a great idea to keep the out of date flares on board as spares, as many still work after their expiration dates. Signal kits save money compared to the cost of buying the flares and components separately.
What type of flares should you carry? Although the U.S. Coast Guard requires you to carry 3 Day/Night Approved signals aboard, experts recommend the following:
- INLAND BOATERS: Handheld RED flares AND/OR Aerial 12 gauge or Skyblazer Signals.
- COASTAL BOATERS: Handheld RED flares AND Aerial 12 gauge or Skyblazer Signals AND Orange handheld smoke flares.
- OFFSHORE BOATERS: Handheld Flares: SOLAS Approved AND 25MM Aerial flares AND floating SOLAS Approved Smoke flares.
